PANAJI: Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant has raised concerns over the growing health risks among the state’s youth, attributing them to increasing mobile phone addiction and a decline in outdoor physical activity.
Speaking at a financial assistance distribution event for sports bodies, Dr. Sawant emphasized the vital role of sports in ensuring both physical fitness and mental well-being. “Youth are increasingly addicted to mobile games and avoiding outdoor play. This trend is contributing to a surge in lifestyle diseases such as diabetes,” he warned.
Highlighting the importance of reviving Goa’s sporting spirit, the Chief Minister announced continued financial assistance to State Sports Associations, Sports Clubs, and individual sportspersons. He urged all stakeholders—parents, educators, and community leaders—to join hands in strengthening the state’s sports ecosystem.
Looking ahead, Dr. Sawant called upon Goa’s sports associations to set their sights on the 2036 Olympics. He assured full government support through enhanced sports infrastructure, professional coaching, and training facilities. “We must work with vision and determination to ensure Goa’s participation on the Olympic stage,” he said.
Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for a ₹3 crore sports ground at Cumbharjua, reaffirming the government’s commitment to developing modern sports infrastructure across the state.
“The future of our youth lies in discipline, health, and ambition. Let us work together to make Goa a sporting powerhouse,” Dr. Sawant concluded.
