CANACONA: Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) Councillor Shubham Komarpant has urged authorities to halt the approval of large-scale infrastructure projects—including hotels and mega-housing complexes—within the CMC limits until essential public infrastructure is significantly upgraded.
In a memorandum submitted to Deputy Collector Prataprao Gaonkar on Wednesday, Komarpant expressed serious concern over the mounting pressure on basic amenities such as roads, water supply, electricity, and sewage management due to unregulated development. The petition was also addressed to the CMC Chief Officer, Deputy Town Planner, and Canacona Mamlatdar.
Komarpant pointed out that ongoing multi-dwelling and high-density construction projects are severely straining Canacona’s limited resources and degrading the environment, thereby negatively impacting the quality of life for local residents.
He demanded that permissions for new hotels and residential complexes be withheld unless the government first ensures the provision of supporting infrastructure—such as sewage treatment plants, adequate water and electricity supply, and proper road connectivity.
Calling for a moratorium on all new permissions for multi-dwelling units, Komarpant further asserted that all ongoing and existing projects must be equipped with fully operational Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), well-planned road networks, and sustainable water systems.
He emphasised the need for a rigorous and transparent regulatory process to ensure that future developments strictly adhere to environmental norms and urban planning regulations, stating that “the health, safety, and well-being of Canacona residents is at stake.”
