CANACONA: The Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) concluded its five-year tenure on a high note by inducting five vehicles worth ₹1.83 crore into its fleet for solid waste management on the last day of its term.
The vehicles — two compactors, two trucks and one soil tanker — were inaugurated on Tuesday by Vice-Chairperson and Acting Chairperson Gandesh Madganvkar in the presence of councillors and municipal officials. The fleet was lined up in front of the new CMC building, where the vehicles were garlanded and a traditional ritual, including applying sindoor on the front bonnet of a truck, was performed to mark the inauguration.
During the function, the council remembered the recently deceased chairperson Laxuman alias Bakal Pagui, noting that he had pursued the proposal with Goa Solid Waste Management authorities for procurement of the vehicles.
Chaudi ward councillor and former chairperson Ramakant Naik Gaunkar, Palolem-Ourem councillor and former chairperson Simon Rebello, and Acting Chairperson Gandesh Madganvkar addressed the gathering. They highlighted that the outgoing council had undertaken several developmental works and expressed satisfaction at completing its tenure with the addition of the new fleet.
Devabhag councillor and former chairperson Sara Shamba Naik Desai, Nagorcem councillor Hemant Kumar Naik Gaonkar, Ponsulem councillor Narcisco alias Nadin Fernandes, Kindlem councillor Amita Pagi, and Bhagatwada councillor and former councillor Nitu Desai were present for the brief inaugural function. Municipal Inspector Yesso Desai compered the programme.
