CANACONA: Canacona Municipal Council’s wish to name the upcoming Ravindra Bhavan in Canacona after the former Arts & Culture Minister late Sanjay Bandekar received a shot-in-the-arm after Minister of Arts & Culture Govind Gaude upheld the CMC resolution.
It may be recalled that after some councillors advocated and the Chairperson in affirmation, the Canacona Municipal Council unanimously passed a resolution to name Canacona Ravindra Bhavan after the son of Canacona’s late Sanjay Bandekar. According to council sources, Bandekar during his tenure as an MLA of Canacona and Minister in the Goa government has brought laurels to the taluka, particularly in the Arts and Culture department. Bandekar besides holding the Ministry of Sports & Youth Affairs was also the Arts & Culture Minister and during his tenure was instrumental in bringing various Sports and Cultural Halls to the Canacona constituency.
Interestingly, it was during Bandekar’s tenure that a piece of land was acquired at the prime location of Chaudi for constructing the Swimming Pool complex, and was transferred to the Department of Arts & Culture in the year 2012, where present Ravindra Bhavan was constructed and will be inaugurated on Tuesday. Bandekar, who is often referred to as Vikas-Purush of Canacona for his all-out developmental works, is a 3-time MLA (MGP, Congress) has joined the BJP in the last few months of his life (just before the 2012 assembly elections) and canvassed for the then BJP Candidate and was considered instrumental in getting Ramesh Tawadkar elected) died after a sudden illness in May 2012.
CMC’s unanimous resolution is submitted to the Government as well as to the Speaker/ Canacona MLA reportedly stating that naming of Canacona Ravindra Bhavan after the late Sanjay Bandekar will be a befitting pay-back to the vikas-purush.
On Sunday, CMC Chairperson Sara Naik Dessai with her ruling councillors called on Arts & Culture Minister Govind Gaude, who reportedly responded positively when informed about the necessity to name Ravindra Bhavan of Canacona after Sanjay Bandekar. ‘ Yes, I am going to put a favourable note to the Chief Minister regarding the same. We should honestly remember the contributions of such workable persons, and I agree with your view and accordingly will place the case positively for naming the Canacona Ravindra Bhavan after the former Arts & Culture Minister’, Gaude is reported to have responded to the visiting CMC Chairperson/councillors meeting him at his residence on Sunday.
Meanwhile, when asked during Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar’s media address about the CMC Resolution on the naming of Ravindra Bhavan of Canacona after late Minister Sanjay Bandekar, Tawadkar retorted saying, ‘It is for Arts & Culture department and Chief Minister to take a decision in this matter. And I don’t have anything else to differ on that CMC resolution.’.
Meanwhile, when specifically asked about the appointment of Chairman of Ravindra Bhavan (Canacona) Speaker/Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar quipped, ‘not yet decided’, and refused to comment on the probable candidate to occupy the post of Chairman and Directors on Board of Canacona Ravindra Bhavan.
