CANACONA: The Community Health Centre (CHC), Canacona, organised a Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) programme on the theme “Role of Nurse in Dialysis Unit” on Tuesday, aimed at enhancing knowledge and skills of nursing personnel in the management of kidney disease and dialysis care.
The programme, open to nursing professionals across Goa, was organised in coordination with the Goa Nursing Council and the Dialysis Unit of the Nephrology Department, Goa Medical College, Bambolim. Over 300 nurses from different parts of the state were expected to participate in the day-long educational programme held at CHC Canacona.
According to a press note, Canacona taluka has a significant number of patients suffering from kidney-related ailments, making the training especially relevant. The CNE focused on comprehensive education covering kidney diseases and dialysis procedures.
Dr Iona Barreto, Junior Physician at CHC Canacona, inaugurated the academic sessions with a presentation on factors affecting kidney disease, the role of nurses in kidney care, stages of kidney disease, and patient health education.
Dr Ashish Kumar delivered a session on the anatomy and physiology of the kidney, causes of kidney failure, risk factors, differences between acute and chronic kidney failure, and related signs and symptoms.
Dr Joseema Colaco addressed the management of kidney patients and indications for haemodialysis, while Brother Inacio Fernandes explained various types of dialysis and dialysis procedures.
Sessions on routine pre-dialysis procedures, patient care and vascular access for dialysis were conducted by Ward Sister Shashwat K. Naik and Staff Nurse Priya Parab. Staff Nurses Alisha Fernandes and Malashree Kotharkar spoke on psychological issues faced by dialysis patients, complications of haemodialysis, and nursing management of patients undergoing dialysis.
Dietary advice for dialysis patients and experience-sharing by a kidney transplant patient were covered by Staff Nurse Monica Parab and Ward Sister Natalina Borges.
The programme was organised by Ward Master Prashant Devidas along with the staff of CHC Canacona, with the objective of strengthening awareness and capacity-building among nursing professionals, particularly in Canacona taluka.
