VASCO: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) will observe International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day on September 20, 2025, with a massive awareness and cleanup campaign across 20 beaches in Goa. The initiative, conducted under the aegis of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 14 — Life Below Water, has been coordinated by the ICG in India since 2006, with active support from central and state agencies, corporate sectors, NGOs, and local communities.
Goa, with its 193-km-long coastline, rich marine biodiversity, and thriving tourism industry, has been chosen for an extensive drive to spread awareness and promote collective action for a cleaner and greener environment. The campaign will cover beaches in both North and South Goa, including Baina, Bogmalo, Colva, Benaulim, Velsao, Majorda, Betalbatim, Varca, Mobor, Betul, Utorda, Baga, Miramar, Siridao, Arambol, Morjim, Vagator, Anjuna, Calangute, and Candolim.
Speaking about the initiative, DIG Goa Coast Guard Headquarters Manoj Bhatia said, “International Coastal Cleanup Day is more than just a cleanliness drive. It is a global movement to protect marine life and preserve our coasts for future generations. Goa, with its vibrant coastline, offers the perfect platform to bring citizens together for this cause.”
Highlighting the importance of public participation, he added, “We appeal to all citizens, students, and organisations to volunteer in this initiative. Every small contribution makes a big difference in safeguarding our beaches and marine ecosystem. This is in line with the Government of India’s vision and the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.”
Bhatia further stressed the need to inspire young minds through such activities. “This event will encourage the next generation to adopt cleaner habits, contribute to nation-building, and promote better community living. By joining hands, we can ensure that our coastline remains not just a tourist attraction, but a symbol of pride and responsibility,” he said.
The ICG has urged people across Goa to participate at their nearest beach and contribute to the global effort to keep the oceans clean.
