The Goa Green Brigade along with Goa horticulturist Miguel Braganza and Nestor Rangel of Ilha Verde organic brown rice fame and tree lovers on Sunday a new life to these heritage coconut trees by “New Rooting” with the use of organic manure.
The iconic Guirim coconut trees are on the verge of dying due to the indiscriminate choking of their stem with the dumping of debris to a height of one to five metres above the original ground level at the road hump for the Guirim underpass from St. Anthony Ward to Monte de Guirim.
Around 15 volunteers dug soil around the coconut trees and filled-in manure to help the coconut trees to get fresh roots.
“We are thankful to Mr. Farmer for agreeing to provide us with the equipment like pickaxe, fawda, crowbar, gamela, etc. Nestor Rangel provided the organic manure mixture at cost price and provide the workmen,” the organisers said.
