MARGAO: The MMC having failed to clear the footpaths along the Margao-Navelim 4-lane road, Colmorod citizens engage a private machine to clear the footpaths of the bushes, ahead of the Rosary Church Feast.
Spearheading the initiative, former Chairperson Savio Coutinho stated that traditionally, the Council would deploy workers and sweepers along all the roads leading to the Navelim Church a week before the Feast, and get the roads cleaned spick and span, however the Council failed to do so this year.
With thousands of pedestrians using these roads to go to the church or the fair, the thick growth of bushes on the footpaths force them to use the road, thereby posing a serious risk of accidents, Coutinho said.
As a Councillor myself and Councillor after me have always made it a point to get the road and footpaths cleared not only before the Feast but at all times, inspite of limited resources and manpower then.
And now with double fold Increase in resource spending and the Increase in manpower, the public service is miserable he charged.
Local resident Olympio Fernandes said that the authorities need to understand the hardships faced by the people and take corrective measures.
“There are fields beyond the footpaths and having grass and bushes on the footpaths is all the more scary as many a times snake’s and reptiles are found moving on the footpaths he added.
Another resident Orlando Dias stated that the government boasts about the state being 100% Defection free, a visit along the footpaths between Kudchadkar Hospital to Preeti hotel will surely prove them wrong, he said.
“Taking cover of the bushes migrants are often seen defecating in the open,” Dias said.
The residents demanded that sweepers at least be deputed by MMC to clean the roads.
