SERAULIM: In a significant crackdown on alleged illegal LPG handling, Colva police seized 174 domestic gas cylinders from a site near the Seraulim bandh late Monday night, suspecting a large-scale gas siphoning operation.
Acting on suspicion during a routine midnight patrol, a police team led by PSI Prashant Bhagat stumbled upon two mini trucks laden with gas cylinders parked near a makeshift room. Five men were found transferring LPG from domestic cylinders into commercial ones — a dangerous and unauthorized activity.
The individuals, all natives of Rajasthan — Rakesh Kumar (26), Pradeep (20), Banvarlal (25), Manphool Bishnoi, and Kamal Maanzu — were taken into custody under Section 35 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS).
When questioned, the suspects reportedly gave unclear responses and failed to present any documentation, such as purchase receipts, permits, or proof of authorized storage or distribution. They also admitted they had no licensed godown or formal dealership, raising serious concerns about the legality of their operations.
Colva Police Inspector Arun Desai confirmed that several of the seized cylinders lacked standard safety seals, while some were noticeably heavier — indicating possible illegal refilling.
Further inspection revealed a temporary structure with cement sheet roofing in the area, where both trucks and numerous cylinders were found. Police have called upon officials from Legal Metrology and Civil Supplies, Margao, to inspect the seized cylinders and take appropriate follow-up action.
Authorities suspect this could be part of a larger racket and have launched a deeper investigation into the origin and supply chain of the illegally handled gas.
