New Delhi: With National Sports Day becoming a critical event in our calendar, ICC Charman Jay Shah took to social media, celebrating Indian athletes and highlighting Major Dhyan Chand’s legacy today.
National Sports Day is celebrated on August 29 in India, commemorating the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, one of the country’s legendary hockey players.
The day honours his achievements and the contributions of other athletes to Indian sports. Dhyan Chand, known as the “Wizard of Hockey,” played a key role in helping India win three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936.
The day has grown in stature and importance since its establishment, and the newly-appointed ICC chairman had his choice words of support to share on this special day.
Shah took to social media to share his wishes for the entire contingent of Indian sportspeople, who have dedicated their lives to working towards attaining excellence in their own disciplines.
“On this National Sports Day, I warmly commend our athletes, coaches, and everyone who has devoted their life to sports,” Shah wrote on Instagram.
“As we honor the legacy of Major Dhyan Chand Ji on his birth anniversary, let’s commit ourselves to making India a powerhouse on the global sporting stage!”
BCCI secretary Jay Shah is set to succeed Greg Barclay as the new chairman of the ICC, as per an announcement by the global cricket body on Tuesday.
Shah will be the fifth Indian to head cricket’s global governing authority after Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shahank Manohar.
At 35, he will also become the youngest ever to head the ICC.
On the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid homage to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on the National Sports Day.
“Greetings on National Sports Day. Today we pay homage to Major Dhyan Chand Ji. It is an occasion to compliment all those passionate about sports and those who have played for India,” Modi said on X.
“Our Government is committed to supporting sports and ensuring more youth are able to play and shine,” the prime minister said.
