PANAJI: After a gap of 15 years, the Congress–Goa Forward Party (GFP) student alliance has returned to power at the Goa University Students’ Council, defeating the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in what the Congress described as a victory of unity, democracy and progressive values.
Welcoming the outcome, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) Media Department Chairman Amaranth Panjikar termed the result a historic mandate by students against divisive politics and political interference in educational institutions. He said the alliance of the NSUI, the Congress students’ wing, and the Goa Forward Students’ Wing had prevailed due to unity and sustained grassroots effort.
“This victory once again proves that nothing is impossible when democratic forces stand united. The students of Goa University have sent out a strong message by rejecting divisive politics and choosing unity, democracy and progressive values,” Panjikar said in a press statement issued on Tuesday.
He said the mandate reflected growing dissatisfaction among students over what he described as authoritarian functioning and increasing political interference on campuses. Claiming that the outcome had wider political implications, Panjikar said the unity displayed by students signalled a shift in public mood ahead of the 2027 state Assembly elections.
Congratulating the newly elected Students’ Council, Panjikar expressed confidence that the new leadership would work for the upliftment and welfare of students, focus on improving educational facilities and firmly uphold democratic rights and freedoms within the university.
He also praised student organisations and young voters for actively participating in the electoral process, stating that their engagement had strengthened democratic practice at the university level.
