NEW DELHI: Political tensions flared in Bihar after a man allegedly hurled abuses at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother during Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Voter Adhikar Yatra in Darbhanga. The accused, seen wearing a Congress flag in a viral video, was arrested on Friday, Darbhanga Police confirmed.
“In the said case, while registering an FIR under Simri police station, one accused has been arrested and is being sent to the court,” police said in a post on X.
The video triggered a storm with the BJP registering a complaint and demanding an apology from the Congress. A separate case was also filed against Rahul Gandhi in Patna over the incident.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah strongly condemned the remarks, calling it a “stain on democracy.” He accused Congress of stooping to its “lowest level” under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, adding, “They cannot tolerate how a poor mother’s son has been sitting in the Prime Minister’s chair for the past 11 years and taking the country forward.”
BJP President JP Nadda echoed the criticism, saying the abuses had “crossed all limits of indecency,” and demanded apologies from both Rahul Gandhi and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, who was present at the rally.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar too disapproved of the incident, terming it “inappropriate” and “condemnable.”
Meanwhile, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera denied the allegations, saying the BJP was trying to divert attention from real issues by “raking up irrelevant matters.”
