MORMUGAO: Congress candidates Vasant Naik and Sandra Rodrigues filed their nomination papers on Monday for the upcoming Zilla Panchayat elections, drawing strong support from party leaders and workers across the Mormugao taluka. Naik submitted his nomination from Sancoale, while Rodrigues filed her papers from Cortalim, marking the party’s formal entry into the electoral fray in both key constituencies.
A large gathering of Congress supporters accompanied the two candidates as they arrived at the nomination centre. Senior party leaders present included South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes, Cortalim Block President Peter D’Souza, Congress fishermen leader Olemcio Simoes, Congress committee member Orvilee Dourado and several block-level functionaries. Their presence signalled the party’s intention to consolidate its base and project a united front in the ZP elections.
After filing his nomination, Vasant Naik said he was committed to taking up long-pending local issues. “I have been the ZP in the past and taken up various development works .People have placed their trust in me, and I want to ensure that development reaches every ward in Sancoale. My priority will be to work closely with residents and deliver solutions that make a real difference,” he said.
Sandra Rodrigues, who filed her nomination immediately after, expressed gratitude for the support shown by Congress workers and local residents. “I am contesting to strengthen grassroots governance in Cortalim. I believe in inclusive and transparent development, and I will make sure that every voice in the constituency is heard and represented,” she said.
With both nominations filed, the Congress camp believes that Naik and Rodrigues will give the party a strong foothold in the ZP elections as campaigning begins in full swing.
