New Delhi: In the midst of a heated controversy over her comments on Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma, an old social media post by Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed has resurfaced, revealing her past criticism of another cricket legend, Virat Kohli. This development comes after Mohamed sparked outrage by calling Sharma “fat” and questioning his leadership following India’s recent victory over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy.
Mohamed’s 2018 post criticized Kohli for his response to a fan who preferred watching English and Australian batsmen. Kohli had suggested that such fans should consider living elsewhere if they didn’t appreciate Indian cricket. Mohamed’s post highlighted the irony of Kohli’s statement, given his involvement with foreign brands and his admiration for international sports figures.
The resurfacing of this post has led many to question whether Mohamed has a broader issue with Indian cricket players, given her recent criticism of Sharma. Sharma, who is set to turn 38, was dismissed early in the match against New Zealand but led his team to a 44-run victory. Mohamed’s comments on Sharma’s fitness and leadership were widely condemned, including by the BJP and Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who termed her remarks as “deeply shameful” and “outright pathetic.”
Mohamed defended her comments as a generic observation about an athlete’s fitness, claiming they were not intended to be body-shaming. However, her party distanced itself from her remarks, instructing her to delete the posts.
