Panaji: Drawing the Governor’s attention to the failures of the BJP Government, Congress MLAs met him on Tuesday and urged him to address pressing issues plaguing Goa’s image.
Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira, and Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa met Goa Governor Shri Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju and submitted a memorandum requesting action.
“We drew his attention to governance failures, corruption, the collapse of law and order, environmental damage, and threats to Goa’s identity. We hope that, as the constitutional head of the state, he will uphold the Constitution’s spirit and Goa’s people’s interests,” Yuri Alemao said.
Alemao said there are many issues related to public safety, environmental protection, fiscal stability, and the state’s social fabric.
“But instead of addressing these, the BJP Govt is doing nothing. It is busy with events and commissions. Such programs don’t benefit the common man. Important issues are ignored,” Alemao said.
He added that Goa has seen a disturbing rise in violent assaults, organised crime, drug-related offences, land and real-estate frauds, and night-time violence.
“Women, citizens, and social activists report delayed police action, undermining public confidence in the justice system,” Alemao said.
He said the Arpora fire incident exposed the BJP Govt’s loot and corruption. “The corrupt system killed innocent people in the Arpora Night Club. It allowed illegalities for hafta,” he said.
Congress leader Alemao said that despite public assurances, the Govt has failed to regulate coal handling at Mormugao Port and control coal pollution.
“Residents suffer environmental and health impacts due to inadequate safeguards, weak enforcement, and lack of transparent monitoring.”
“The state’s debt’s crossed alarming levels, with borrowings used for salaries, pensions, and routine expenditure instead of creating durable assets. Rising interest liabilities squeeze funds for health, education, and infrastructure. This raises questions about the state’s financial sustainability,” he said.
Alemao said the Govt has failed to address road accidents, provide a safe environment for the public and tourists.
