Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Congress has decided not to field a candidate in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, following disagreements with its alliance partner, the National Conference (NC), over seat allocation.
After an extensive meeting with senior party leaders, J&K Congress chief Tariq Karra announced that the party formally conveyed its decision to the National Conference but has yet to receive any response.
“Our central leaders requested the National Conference for a ‘safe seat’ — either the first or second seat. However, we were offered the fourth seat, which we believe is not secure. After thorough discussion, we unanimously decided not to contest,” Karra explained.
The National Conference has already named three candidates for the Rajya Sabha polls, with nominations set to be filed on Monday. NC leaders maintain they have left the fourth seat open for their Congress ally.
Currently, the BJP holds 28 MLAs in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly and is poised to win one Rajya Sabha seat. The ruling NC, with 41 MLAs plus support from six independents and six Congress members, is expected to secure three seats.
The contest for the fourth seat, however, remains contentious. The Congress has expressed dissatisfaction with the arrangement, signaling strained relations within the alliance due to differences over governance, administration, and development in the region.
This development marks a significant rift between the two parties ahead of the crucial Rajya Sabha elections.
