PANAJI: The Congress has once again reiterated its firm stand against political defections, with Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao stating that the party will not tolerate defectors, especially while cases are being contested in court.
“Defection is something our party is fighting against. Our leader Rahul Gandhi has clearly said that defection should be stopped,” Alemao asserted.
Meanwhile, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Amit Patkar said that the party will decide on forming alliances for the upcoming Zilla Panchayat (ZP) elections only after discussions with like-minded partners.
“We are supposed to meet them today. We will discuss some developments that have taken place during the last two to three days,” Patkar said.
The Congress ZP committee convened in Margao on Saturday to review ongoing preparations.
In a separate development, Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa has raised strong objections to the Mormugao Port Authority’s (MPA) reported move to intervene at Betul Port, warning that such involvement would adversely affect tourism, disrupt traditional fishing activities and jeopardise the livelihoods of residents in Betul, Cananguinim and neighbouring villages. He further cautioned about the potential environmental impact.
D’Costa reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding local interests, stating he will not allow any MPA interference at the port.
