DELHI: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Wednesday adopted a strongly worded resolution expressing deep concern over recent national security lapses and sharply criticizing the Modi government’s handling of the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack.
The CWC began by extending condolences to the families of the soldiers, officers, and civilians who lost their lives in the Poonch and Pahalgam attacks. “The nation stands united in grief and resolve,” the statement said, reiterating the party’s “complete support” to the Indian armed forces.
However, the party raised pointed questions about what it described as a “deeply troubling” intelligence failure in Pahalgam. Despite heightened alerts and known threats in the region, terrorists managed to execute a major assault, resulting in multiple casualties. “The government must explain how such a lapse was allowed to occur,” the resolution stated, demanding accountability and the immediate apprehension of those responsible.
The CWC also questioned the sudden and unexplained halt in India’s retaliatory action against Pakistan. What has particularly drawn ire is a claim by U.S. President Donald Trump that a ceasefire was achieved by threatening India with trade sanctions. The Congress criticized the Modi government’s silence on the matter, calling it “inexplicable and unacceptable,” and warned that Trump’s remarks have dangerously internationalised the Kashmir issue.
“The Modi Government’s failure to rebut President Trump’s claim represents a serious compromise of our national position and prestige,” the resolution declared.
Adding to the controversy, the Congress condemned what it called “appalling” remarks made by a senior BJP Minister against a senior woman Army officer. The CWC has demanded his immediate resignation and legal action, citing a need to protect the dignity of the armed forces and gender respect within the military.
In its concluding remarks, the Congress reiterated demands by party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for an all-party meeting chaired by Prime Minister Modi and a special session of Parliament. The CWC also criticized the Prime Minister for holding an exclusive meeting with NDA Chief Ministers on April 25, calling it a “blatant attempt to politicise the operation.”
“At a time of national crisis, the government must take the Opposition and the people of India into confidence. Transparency, unity, and democratic dialogue are not weaknesses, but the bedrock of effective governance,” the resolution affirmed.
