PANAJI: Union Minister for Environment, Forests, and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), said that the Goa government has been instructed by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) to contemplate designating Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary as a tiger reserve.
In a correspondence to a South Goa Member of Parliament Captain Viriato Fernandes, the Union Minister has said that only once a proposal is received from the State administration, NTCA will take up the matter as per the procedure provided down under the Law.
“I would like to notify you that the State government has been notified by the National Tiger Conservation Authority about the matter (designating Mhadei as a tiger reserve) for their consideration and necessary action,” stated Yadav.
“The NTCA will handle the matter in accordance with established procedure and provisions of the relevant acts after the State government’s proposal is received,” he continued.
Based on a statement filed by ten schools, Viriato had written to the Union Minister in August asking for the Mhadei to be declared a tiger reserve.
The Bombay High Court in Goa is currently considering a contempt petition against the State for not designating the sanctuary as a tiger habitat in the ongoing case involving the tiger reserve.
