PANAJI: Chief Electrical Engineer Stephen Fernandes has issued a fresh warning that consumers using generators, inverters, or renewable energy systems without meeting mandatory safety requirements risk facing criminal charges and immediate disconnection of their electricity supply.
In a public advisory, the department emphasized that prior approval and certified safety measures are essential for any power generation source linked to the grid. The warning follows reports of rule violations that, according to officials, endanger power department staff and public safety.
The notice also referenced a 2024 fatal electrocution incident in Bicholim, reportedly caused by backfed electricity from an improperly installed inverter.
Authorities stressed that any backfeeding into the public distribution network can lead to fatal accidents and invite legal action.
Consumers have been urged to consult licensed electrical contractors and secure the necessary permissions before installing any backup or renewable power systems to avoid penalties and ensure safe usage.
