SATTARI: Heavy rain wreaked havoc in several parts of Sattari taluka including Valpoi town as well as Poriem constituency with a flood-like situation prevailing in many villages.
A large number of houses got inundated as the water levels of river Mhadei and other tributaries rose following heavy rains over the past few days. However, luckily no human life was lost.
In the early hours of Thursday, it was found that almost half of Velus village near Valpoi was inundated while several other villages were cut off as roads were inundated.
Many houses and roads were flooded as heavy rains struck Sattari taluka, prompting queries regarding the pre-monsoon work in Valpoi town.
Many remote villages were cut off, as people were unable to move out of their homes due to waterlogging. Power outages were also witnessed in many areas as trees were uprooted which fell on electricity poles.
Poriem MLA Deviya Rane raised the issue of flooding in Sattari on Thursday. She said that life has come to a standstill in Sattari while the students have missed their examinations.
She demanded that the CM and WRD minister should take immediate steps to protect the life and livelihood of the people.
The state fire department has reported distress calls 24×7 from across the state, with nearly 200 calls of the uprooting of trees and damages to property.
The remote villagers were not able to even move out of their houses as the main road in the village was overflowing with water. There was also no water and power supply public transport, internet and cellular network.
The gusty winds and heavy rains caused havoc in Sattari taluka. Many trees had fallen on electric poles, on houses and also on roads.
Farmers said their crops had been totally destroyed. They gave examples of their banana plantations being destroyed and how areca nut, coconut and other trees had fallen down.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in both North Goa and South Goa districts and issued a ‘Red alert’, asking people to be prepared for any situation.
The IMD has predicted strong winds with speeds reaching 45 to 50 km per hour and gusting up to 65 kmph along the Maharashtra-Goa coast.
