CORTALIM: In a twin initiative aimed at empowering women and supporting the farming community, Cortalim MLA Anton Vas on Monday distributed sanction orders under the Laadli Laxmi and Gruha Adhaar schemes to 64 beneficiaries, while also inaugurating a horticulture outlet under the Cortalim Agriculture Marketing Co-operative Society Ltd.
The event, held in the presence of ZP member Merciana Vas and local residents, saw 36 Laadli Laxmi and 28 Gruha Adhaar sanction letters being handed over. “We placed our request before Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane and he promptly cleared it. Today, 64 women have benefitted,” Vas said, adding that he continues to press for higher financial support under both schemes.
The MLA also highlighted efforts to bring affordable produce to households through co-operative initiatives. “We have launched a horticulture unit to provide fresh vegetables at lower prices. Over the years, several associations and societies — from the Farmers Club and Kala Kendra to Dairy and Fisheries Co-operatives — have been formed under the Cortalim banner to serve people in multiple ways,” he said.
Vas also drew attention to the rising price of coconuts ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi, calling them both a dietary staple and a festive necessity. “Talks are on to explore bulk purchase options so that coconuts can be provided at subsidised rates. We are committed to easing the burden on households,” he assured.
The MLA reiterated his earlier demand in the Assembly for enhanced assistance under flagship schemes, urging the government to increase Laadli Laxmi benefits to ₹2 lakh and Gruha Adhaar to ₹3,000 per month. “In view of the rising cost of living, such support would go a long way in empowering women,” he said, while encouraging villagers to approach his office for help in availing government schemes.
