CANACONA: Stating Canacona is an international tourism hub, Canacona Municipal Councilor Shubham Komarpant has called for immediate stoppage of illegal operation of Scrap Yards across municipal areas.
Komarpant infact submitted a memorandum to Canacona Municipal Council Chief Officer Laximikant Dessai regarding illegal operation of scrap yards across the municipal area. Shubham reminded
Incidentally, somewhere in mid June last year, CMC has resolved to shut down nine illegal scrap yards located within residential areas, citing environmental and safety concerns. This action follows a period of public outcry and government notices urging compliance with regulations regarding scrap yard operations in the area. And accordingly notices were served and CMC in the first week of December last declared that 11 scrap yards are either demolished or removed. However, according to Councillor Shubham Komarpant, none of the scrapyards are removed in reality and all the scrapyards continue to operate illegally.
Infact, the number of illegal scrap yards has increased. ‘In my ward itself where one scrapyard was operating, an additional one has come up.’
Shubham further informed that despite various complaints by one of his colleagues no action has been taken in the past. ‘This scrap yards are creating a nuisance for society, Canacona is an international tourism hub and these scrapyards are ruining our beautiful image’.
Komarpant further informed that Chief officer Dessai who visits twice a week to CMC has assured to take strict action as early as possible, and close down the illegally operated scrap yards for good’.
Komarpant also submitted a memorandum to the office of Canacona Dy. Collector demanding strict action on operations of scrapyards which CMC claimed to be closed in the past.
