PANAJI: The North Goa Principal District and Sessions Court has permitted Sukhvender, an accused in the murder case of BJP leader Sonali Phogat, to travel abroad to celebrate his wedding anniversary and attempt to mend his marital relationship.
Sukhvender had sought permission to visit Phuket, Thailand, and Dubai between January 30 and February 20, 2026, citing that ongoing criminal proceedings and the filing of the charge sheet had severely strained his relationship with his wife.
The accused argued that the travel was necessary to “rebuild” their relationship, particularly around their anniversary on February 18.
The prosecution strongly opposed the request, highlighting that Sukhvender is directly involved in the murder case and that the trial is at a critical stage, with charges being framed. Authorities warned of a high risk of the accused absconding.
Despite these objections, the Court allowed the plea, noting the “peculiar facts and circumstances” of the case. The order stated that rejecting the application could further strain the accused’s marital relationship, making travel abroad appropriate under the circumstances.
Earlier, on September 4, 2025, the Court had granted Sukhvender similar travel permission, which was challenged by the prosecution and lapsed while pending before the High Court. The High Court later disposed of the petition, allowing Sukhvender to file a fresh application.
