PANAJI: A special court in Mapusa has extended the judicial custody of Zenito Cardozo and seven others for another 14 days in connection with the assault case involving social activist Rama Kankonkar.
The extension comes after the court earlier rejected Cardozo’s bail plea in October, citing his criminal background. The court noted his prior conviction in the 2009 Siridao gang war case, which the Bombay High Court had described as a grave offence.
While denying bail, the court also took into consideration potential threats to Kankonkar’s safety. The case has been booked under various sections, including provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
All eight accused will remain in judicial custody until the next hearing, which is scheduled for November 13.
