PERNEM: Alarming signs of structural distress have been reported along the Malpe-Pedne stretch of National Highway 66, where cracks and damage to the retaining wall have sparked fresh concerns about a possible collapse during the upcoming monsoon season.
Local activist Rajan Korgaonkar, along with several residents, has voiced serious concern over the deteriorating condition of the bypass, warning that in its current state, the road is vulnerable to further damage from heavy rains.
The area has previously witnessed structural failures, heightening fears of a repeat incident.
“This is a ticking time bomb. Without immediate repairs, we could see the road give way again, posing a major risk to commuters and cutting off vital connectivity,” Korgaonkar warned.
Residents are calling on the Public Works Department and highway authorities to carry out an urgent inspection and take preventive action before the rains intensify, stressing that lives and property are at stake.
