Curchorem:Recalling the Khemlo Sawant episode, former Municipal Administration Director and Citizens for Democracy leader Elvis Gomes demanded a criminal investigation into events leading to submission of letter for removal of chairperson of the Curchorem Municipal council and his election a few hours earlier. It may be recalled that congress functionary Khemlo Sawant had been arrested on allegations of influencing a BJP MLA to switch sides. Sawant was later acquitted by the courts. Gomes said that the question was no more whether the action of the Councillors of moving a no confidence motion against the duly elected chairperson was legally valid or not. But he said the requirement was to unearth what had happened within those few hours before some of the Councillors reversed their decision. He said that the government was not expected to work within the legal framework as had been seen in the recent past when it came to appointment of the state election commissioner which was quashed by the Supreme Court. He said that the people should find out as to what kind of fabric the Councillors were made up of who could not stand by a decision even for few days. “ Democracy fails when elected Councillors do not have any responsibility to the people who elect them but go by the bidings of some heavy weight politician who dictates terms to them.
