CUNCOLIM: The Cuncolim Municipal Council has unanimously opposed the proposed setting up of a fish meal plant in the area, with Opposition Leader and Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao backing the council’s stand and warning against polluting industries that endanger public health.
Alemao expressed shock that the Investment Promotion Board (IPB) cleared the project despite its rejection in Barcem village, Quepem. “When efforts are underway to shut down the existing fish meal plant at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, attempts are being made to set up a second one in Cuncolim. As long as I represent Cuncolim, I will ensure this project never sees the light of day,” he asserted.
Taking a swipe at those pushing the project, Alemao said they should establish such a plant in their own backyard to understand its harmful impact. He also questioned Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s silence on the issue, disclosing that he has written to the CM lodging a strong objection.
Reiterating his support for the people’s demand, Alemao confirmed that the Congress-backed municipal council had rejected the proposal at its special meeting, urging the government to scrap any move to relocate the plant to Cuncolim.
