MARGAO: Leader of Opposition and Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao has written to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant urging the government to revoke permission granted to a new Fish Meal Plant at Cuncolim Industrial Estate, citing grave health and environmental concerns.
Alemao pointed out that existing fish meal plants in the estate continue to function without Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs), leading to severe pollution, contamination of water bodies and rising health problems among locals.
Quoting a survey conducted by the Balli Primary Health Centre, the MLA said cases of respiratory illness, skin allergies, asthma, cancer, chronic kidney disease and psoriasis have been detected among residents in the area.
“You had assured in the Assembly that no new Fish Meal Plants would be allowed in Cuncolim. However, the Goa-IPB’s recent approval has raised doubts about the government’s functioning and transparency,” Alemao wrote in his letter.
He said revoking the permission would be in the “best interest of the people of Cuncolim,” ensuring their health, safety and well-being.
