PORVORIM: Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao raised strong concerns in the Goa Legislative Assembly during Zero Hour over the proposed revival of a Goa Housing Board project at Charam Moddi, Panzorconi in his constituency, saying it has created fear and unrest among local residents.
Alemao said the people of the area have strongly opposed the project, apprehending that it would alter the village’s demography and place immense pressure on basic amenities such as water supply, electricity and infrastructure.
“The land was acquired in the 1990s, but the project was scrapped then due to strong community resistance. Now there is fear that it is being revived again. This could seriously impact the village’s social and cultural fabric,” Alemao told the House.
He pointed out that the land proposed for the housing project is currently being used as a playground for various sports by local youth, and warned that its development would deprive the community of much-needed recreational facilities.
“The proposed project also threatens the heritage, environment and the traditional way of life of the people. The locals are agitated. Any new housing project here could change the demographic character of the village and put a heavy burden on water, electricity and other civic infrastructure,” he said.
Alemao urged the government to take the villagers into confidence before proceeding with any steps and stressed that any decision should be taken keeping in mind the interest and welfare of the local population.
