CUNCOLIM: The Cuncolim Municipal Council (CMC) has urged the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to carry out thorough inspections of all industrial units in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, amid growing concerns over air and water pollution affecting local residents.
During a special council meeting on September 9, the CMC unanimously rejected a proposal by Goan Marine Impex Pvt Ltd to set up a fish meal plant in the area, citing potential environmental hazards and health risks.
The council also decided to return the approved plan to the Town and Country Planning Department for clarification regarding the proposed access road and requested the Goa Investment Promotion Board to withdraw its initial approval for the project.
Responding to the council’s concerns, GSPCB officials stated that directives have already been issued to ensure regular inspections of all red and orange category units in Cuncolim and nearby Verna industrial estates.
The inspections will focus on compliance with environmental norms, including proper treatment of sewage and effluents, as well as control of air pollutant emissions, under the provisions of the Water and Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Acts.
The council’s move highlights increasing local attention to industrial pollution and reflects efforts to protect public health while ensuring that industrial operations meet environmental standards.
The upcoming inspections by the GSPCB are being closely watched by the community, which hopes for effective measures to address long-standing pollution issues in the industrial estate.
