CUNCOLIM: The Cuncolim Municipal Council has unanimously resolved to oppose the proposed fish meal plant in Cuncolim, citing environmental and public health concerns.
At a council meeting held on Wednesday, councillors decided to challenge the “Consent to Operate” granted to M/s Goan Marine Impex Private Limited before the Administrative Tribunal at the earliest.
The Council also resolved to carry out demarcation of the area, stating that the proposed fish meal plant is reportedly coming up outside the designated Industrial Zone. Members expressed concern that allowing such a unit beyond the notified zone would set a wrong precedent.
Councillors pointed out that existing fish meal plants in the area are already causing pollution, adversely affecting the health and daily lives of local residents. In view of these concerns, the Council unanimously opposed the new project.
Following the meeting, all councillors visited the project site and decided to take up the issue seriously. They also resolved to file a police complaint alleging encroachment in connection with the proposed plant.
