CURCHOREM: The Curchorem BJP Yuva Morcha has welcomed the State government’s decision to create the new Kushavati district but has demanded that Curchorem, instead of Quepem, be designated as the district headquarters.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, Curchorem BJP Yuva Morcha president Nikhil Shirodkar said Curchorem was the most suitable choice for the headquarters due to its central location and existing infrastructure. He pointed out that the town enjoys strong road and rail connectivity and already has key civic and administrative facilities.
Shirodkar recalled that the proposal to form a third district was first raised in the Legislative Assembly by Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral, after which Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced the formation of Kushavati district. While welcoming the move, he said the selection of the headquarters should be based on accessibility and practicality.
“Curchorem has a fire station, police station, hospital, garbage processing facility, Ravindra Bhavan and other essential infrastructure. This demand is not emotional but based on administrative convenience,” he said.
He further stated that Curchorem is centrally located in relation to all four talukas of the proposed district, making it more accessible to residents. The town also serves as an education centre, with several schools and higher secondary institutions, along with sports and other facilities.
Rama Naik also urged the government to reconsider its decision and shift the district headquarters from Quepem to Curchorem. Gaurang Naik and Chandan Desai were among those present at the press conference.
