OLD GOA: In a significant breakthrough in a cyber fraud case, the Old Goa Police have successfully arrested the main accused, Suman Ghughu, following a multi-state investigation led by North Goa SP, Rahul Gupta. Ghughu was remanded to five days of police custody after being apprehended in Kolkata, West Bengal.
The case dates back to 30th May 2025, when 71-year-old Essu Naik, a retired employee residing at Denalaxmi Cooperative Housing Society in Alto St. Cruz, Tiswadi-Goa, became the victim of an elaborate phishing scam. According to Naik’s complaint, he received a WhatsApp video call from an individual claiming to be Mr. Dipak Agarwal from Bank of Baroda.
The caller offered a special shopping deal exclusively for retired bank employees. Believing the offer to be legitimate, Mr. Naik shared his CVV number and OTP, which ultimately led to an unauthorized transaction of Rs. 3,13,000/- from his bank account.
The Old Goa Police promptly initiated an investigation, registering the case under Section 319(2) BNS and Section 66 of the Information Technology Act. With crucial information pointing to Kolkata, a dedicated investigation team was formed under the supervision of SP Rahul Gupta. After extensive surveillance and analysis, it was discovered that the fraudulent money had been transferred across multiple bank accounts.
On 27th June 2025, after two days of intensive monitoring, the accused, Suman Ghughu, was located in Kolkata. The local police, in collaboration with Old Goa Police, successfully apprehended him. The accused was then brought to the Netaji Nagar Police Station in Kolkata before being produced in the Hon’ble A.C.J.M Alipore Court on 28th June, where he was granted a transit remand for three days.
Upon his formal arrest at Old Goa Police Station, Ghughu was presented before the Hon’ble JMFC Court in Merces, Goa, and remanded to five days in police custody for further questioning.
