CANACONA: Finally the expected has come true as the sand bar which separated Galgibagha river for millions and millions of years from the Arabian sea got washed out with the surge in water level in the Arabian sea on Saturday morning.
While the environmentalist feel that the sea is reclaiming its land, others believe that the warning of a possible washout of the sand bar just beside the Galgibagha river bridge were neglected by the authorities which will create havoc to the entire Galgibagha river system.
This particular portion of the sand bar had partially washed out when cyclone kyaar had hit the Goan shores between 24th October 2019 – 3rd
November 2019 and inspite of locals raising serious concerns the authorities kept mum till now locals say.
With sea water surging high since Saturday morning the sand bar with no reinforcements gave way informed locals.
After the sand bar got breached the sea water started rushing into the river and there was atleast half a metre of increase in water level upto a couple of kilometres in the Galgibagha river informed locals.
The situation was no different on the other beach villages in the taluka, Patnem, Palolem and Agonda also witnessed a water surge as high waves crushed the shore line destroying properties.
When this correspondent brought this unprecedented happenings to the knowledge of Dr Nadaf who has conducted lot of study on the coastal areas of Canacona he said that this is a natural phenomenon.
Adding further he said that if the sand bar is washed below the high tide line then it is a matter of grave concern as the daily tidal activities will erode more sand from this sand bar he said.
