VASCO: Cyril Aleixo Fernandes has been elected as the new President of the Catholic Association of Goa (CAG) for the next two years.
The Catholic Association of Goa acts as a body representing the Catholics of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman. It is recognized by the Office of the Archbishop of Goa. It works to promote and protect the rights and interests of the members of the catholic community in Goa and was formed in the year 1990.
At the Annual General Body meeting held at Maquinez Palace office of the CAG at Panaji. Fernandes was declared elected as President unopposed at the elections held.
Addressing the attendees in his acceptance speech, Cyril Fernandes thanked the members for reposing faith in him to lead the CAG for the next two years at a crucial juncture wherein the Catholics of Goa are under pressure due to various reasons.
He claimed that his leadership will be hands-on driven with renewed zeal and energy and will make a mark for itself in the annals of the history of CAG. He said it will be an exercise in sacrifice and service and urged his members to roll up their sleeves to do justice to their membership in the service of the catholic and the general public of Goa.
He expressed confidence that he will deliver the goods and live up to the expectations of his members. He sought complete co-operation and help in fulfilling the agenda of CAG and promised to leave no stone unturned to complete all the tasks assigned to him.
Other Office Bearers elected are Pelagia Pires, (Vice-President-North Goa),Melwyn Thomas Fernandes, (Vice-President, South-Goa) and Joven Stephen Fernandes as Treasurer. Graciano Gomes was chosen as the Honorary Secretary General at the Meeting.
Fr. Anthony Fernandes continues to be the Ecclesiastical Advisor appointed by the Archbishop of Goa.
Out- going President of CAG Adv. Nick Colaco gave the welcome address. Barbara D’Mello read out the minutes of the previous meeting and the same were approved by the general body. Treasurer Nelson Figueiredo placed the annual audited accounts of CAG to the members.
