New Delhi: In a dramatic turn of events, speculations about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s potential retirement have ignited a political firestorm. The buzz was triggered by Modi’s recent visit to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur, his first since taking office 11 years ago. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis quickly moved to quash these rumors, affirming that Modi will remain at the helm of Indian politics.
The controversy began when Sanjay Raut, a prominent Shiv Sena leader, suggested that Modi might step down in September, coinciding with his 75th birthday. Raut linked Modi’s RSS visit to discussions about his retirement and the selection of a successor, allegedly from Maharashtra. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party denies any age-related rule for holding ministerial positions, pointing out that Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi is over 80.
Fadnavis responded strongly, stating there is no need to speculate about successors as Modi will continue to lead India beyond 2029. He criticized the talk of succession as akin to “Mughal culture,” emphasizing that discussing such matters while Modi remains in office is inappropriate. This stance aligns with Amit Shah’s previous assertions that the BJP will return to power in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections under Modi’s leadership.
The speculation about Modi’s future has been a recurring theme, notably mentioned by Arvind Kejriwal during last year’s election. Despite these claims, the BJP maintains its confidence in Modi’s ongoing leadership, rejecting any notion of a planned retirement.
