New Delhi: Amid escalating trade tensions with the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called on India to seize the moment and dominate global markets through competitive pricing and superior quality. Speaking from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the 79th Independence Day, PM Modi said the country is “unstoppable” despite mounting external economic pressures.
“This is the time to script history. We must rule the world market by lowering production costs and delivering quality products,” he declared. “‘Daam Kam, Dum Zyada’ — less price, more value — should be our guiding mantra. Economic selfishness is on the rise globally, but instead of worrying about other countries, we must focus on our own goals.”
The remarks come in the backdrop of US President Donald Trump’s steep tariff escalation against India. On August 6, Washington imposed an additional 25% duty on Indian goods, later doubling it to 50%, targeting New Delhi for continuing imports of Russian oil.
India condemned the move as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable,” warning that it could severely impact key export sectors such as textiles, marine products, and leather goods. PM Modi reaffirmed that India would not bow to economic coercion, stressing the need to turn challenges into opportunities.
The tariff hike puts India alongside Brazil as the countries facing the highest US duty rate of 50%. Russia and China have also criticised Washington’s actions, accusing it of applying illegal trade pressure.
