LOUTOLIM: The fatal explosion and flash fire that ripped through Vijay Marine Services’ shipyard in Loutolim last Friday has now claimed five lives, with two more injured workers succumbing to their injuries in hospital.
The blast occurred while labourers were carrying out welding and repair work on an 80-metre landing craft vessel that was still under construction.
The powerful explosion shook the area late Friday evening, leaving seven workers severely injured.
Two victims were declared dead on arrival at the South Goa District Hospital shortly after the incident.
Medical officials said both had suffered extensive burn injuries, and identification was possible only through their clothing.
Of the remaining injured, one worker who had sustained a bone dislocation has been discharged, while another continues to undergo treatment for critical burn injuries. Doctors described his condition as stable but serious.
Maina-Curtorim Police have taken the site supervisor, Raju Boro, a resident of Quelossim and originally from Assam, into custody in connection with the tragedy. He was later granted bail, according to DySP Sidhant Shirodkar.
Police said that further arrests could follow as investigations progress into possible negligence and safety violations at the shipyard. Authorities also confirmed that dying declarations were recorded from the deceased workers during treatment, which are expected to play a significant role in determining accountability for the deadly incident.
