New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday lauded ongoing US efforts to end the Gaza conflict, crediting President Donald Trump’s leadership for what he described as “decisive progress” in peace negotiations.
In a social media statement, the Prime Minister welcomed the signs of movement towards a breakthrough, particularly indications that Hamas is prepared to release hostages captured during the October 7 attack on Israel. “We welcome President Trump’s leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress. Indications of the release of hostages mark a significant step forward,” Modi said, adding that India will support “all efforts towards a durable and just peace.”
India has consistently backed a two-state solution, calling for a sovereign and independent Palestinian state existing peacefully alongside Israel within secure and recognized borders.
While Hamas has agreed to parts of the proposed deal, it has also emphasized that there are still contentious issues requiring further talks. Senior leaders of the group have indicated challenges in releasing all hostages within 72 hours, noting that some may take longer to locate. Hamas has also suggested a willingness to hand over weapons to a future Palestinian governing body for Gaza, though this point was not included in their official statement.
