VALPOI: For the first time in the history of Sattari taluka, landslides occurred in Zharme, Caranzol, Satare and Karmali Budruk areas, which has resulted in a massive loss of natural resources.
This landslide has created many problems for the locals, who say that large scale deforestation in the hilly areas is the main reason behind the landslides.
They say it is essential to take measures now to prevent such incidents in the future.
Right now, the landslides have caused extensive damage to forest resources and cashew plantations.
As per reports, the landslides have occurred at four places in Sattari taluka, which had never happened before.
Locals say that despite nature’s warnings, many trees are being cut down in the hilly areas.
“This reduces the water holding capacity in the soil and cause landslides in hilly areas,” locals say.
While there is rampant deforestation, locals say the Forest Department has completely failed to check the illegalities.
Environmentalists also say that there is a large number of constructions on hilly areas in Sattari taluka. The locals say they have suffered huge losses due to damage to cashew plantations by the landslides.
