PORVORIM: To reduce the damage caused to the documents due to humid coastal weather, r for Archives and Archaeology Subhash Phal Dessai informed the house that portable dehumidifiers are being used in the repositories of the archives department.
“Extreme fluctuations in temperature and humidity may damage old books and documents. To reduce the damage caused to the documents due to humid coastal weather, portable dehumidifiers are being used in the repositories,’ said Desai.
He further said that no air conditioning is installed in the research scholars’ scanning section and the reading room.
“No expenditure has been done on digitization of Archives records since 2021-2022 till date including details of documents digitized, copies of tender and work order,” he added.
The Minister said that since 2017, 42,985 visitors have visited the Department to inspect records. Presently there is no proposal to provide online access for archival documents as they are not fully digitized.
