New Delhi:
In a significant turn of events, exit polls for the 2025 Delhi assembly elections indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) might be on the verge of a comeback in the national capital, ending nearly three decades of being out of power. The polls suggest that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has been in power since 2013, could be voted out despite its robust welfare schemes that have been a cornerstone of its governance.
Delhi witnessed a high voter turnout, with 57.7% of voters casting their ballots by 5 pm, a figure that could potentially break the 2020 voting percentage record. This intense voter engagement underscores the high stakes in this election. AAP leader Sushil Gupta, however, has rejected the exit poll results, expressing confidence that AAP will retain power based on its past performance and the support of the people.
The majority of exit polls for the 2025 Delhi elections predict a clear majority for the BJP. Seven out of ten exit polls suggest that the BJP will secure enough seats to form the government, while AAP is projected to win between 20-25 seats. The Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 consecutive years before AAP took over, is expected to perform poorly, with most polls indicating it will win no more than three seats.
The BJP’s potential victory marks a significant shift, as the party has been out of power in Delhi since 1998. AAP, on the other hand, has been in power since 2013 and was aiming for a hat-trick of solo wins. However, AAP has dismissed the exit poll results, citing past inaccuracies and expressing confidence in their electoral performance.
In the 2020 Delhi elections, exit polls correctly predicted AAP’s victory, with the party winning 62 out of 70 seats. However, the accuracy of exit polls is not always guaranteed, as they have often been incorrect in past elections. The high voter turnout in the 2025 elections, marked by long queues at polling booths, suggests a strong public engagement that could influence the final outcome.
AAP’s rejection of the exit polls is rooted in their past experiences where such polls have proven incorrect. Sushil Gupta emphasized that AAP’s work for the people of Delhi will ultimately lead to their victory. The BJP, meanwhile, is optimistic about its chances, with candidates like Dr. Pankaj Kumar from the Vikaspuri assembly constituency highlighting public dissatisfaction with AAP’s governance.
The Congress, which has failed to win any seats in the last two Delhi elections, is expected to continue its poor performance. The triangular contest between AAP, BJP, and Congress has been intense, with each party banking on different strategies to sway voters.
