New Delhi: The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) remained on high alert during Diwali celebrations and responded to 269 emergency calls across the city on Monday night. Officials confirmed that despite the high number of calls, no major accidents, casualties, or serious injuries were reported.
According to senior fire officials, most incidents involved minor fires triggered by bursting firecrackers, burning candles, and diyas. The department had made elaborate preparations ahead of the festival to handle any emergencies, ensuring that all fire stations were fully staffed and response teams were strategically positioned across the capital.
“Till midnight, we attended to 269 fire-related calls, but thankfully there were no serious incidents,” a DFS official said. The force had earlier cancelled all staff leave and carried out thorough inspections of vehicles, water tenders, and firefighting equipment to maintain readiness throughout the night.
Authorities said extensive planning and coordination with local police and civic bodies were undertaken in advance to ensure public safety. Firefighters and control room personnel worked round the clock as part of the citywide alert, responding swiftly to each reported blaze.
Officials also noted that this year’s Diwali saw a slight increase in fire-related calls compared to the previous year, when the department had received just over 200 emergency alerts. However, they added that the prompt action by DFS teams helped prevent any situation from escalating.
The department has urged residents to remain cautious even after the festival, as leftover firecrackers and decorative lighting can still pose fire risks. Citizens have also been encouraged to immediately report any fire incidents to ensure a quick response.
