New Delhi: Delhi Police have arrested two alleged sleeper cell members accused of planning activities aimed at disturbing public order in the national capital ahead of Republic Day celebrations. The detained individuals are believed to have links with Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Canada based figure associated with the banned organisation Sikhs for Justice. The arrests followed the appearance of pro Khalistan slogans at two locations in Delhi during the days leading up to January 26.
Police investigations revealed that the accused were allegedly persuaded to carry out the act in exchange for money. The plan involved writing provocative messages in public areas with the intention of creating tension and fear among residents. Authorities stated that the operation was coordinated from Canada and that the local participants were in contact with handlers based abroad.
The two arrested men have been identified as Baljinder, an ambulance driver working in Delhi, and Rohit, also known as Keerath, who is said to be his associate. Investigators believe both were recruited through an intermediary closely connected to Pannun. The handler reportedly left India for Canada shortly before Republic Day and maintained regular communication with those on the ground to ensure the plan was executed.
Security agencies had intensified surveillance in the capital after intelligence inputs warned of possible attempts to disrupt national celebrations. Special teams were deployed to monitor sensitive areas, which eventually helped in tracing the suspects. The writing of slogans in Rohini and Dabri triggered an immediate response, leading to the registration of a case and subsequent arrests.
The police have also initiated legal action against Pannun for allegedly issuing threats and attempting to incite unrest. Charges have been filed under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita related to promoting enmity, harming national integration and conspiring against the sovereignty and unity of the country. Officials believe the online videos circulated before Republic Day were part of a broader campaign to create panic.
Interrogation of the accused is under way to identify any additional members involved in the network. Authorities are examining financial transactions and digital communication to trace the full chain of command. Security has been further strengthened across Delhi to prevent any repeat of such incidents and to ensure that public peace remains intact.
