New Delhi: In a significant move towards mending Centre-Delhi relations, the newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Delhi has initiated the withdrawal of court cases against Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. This decision marks a strategic shift following the BJP’s return to power in Delhi after a 27-year hiatus, ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) tenure. The withdrawal aims to resolve the longstanding legal disputes between the Delhi government and the Lieutenant Governor, paving the way for smoother governance.
The BJP government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is prioritizing governance over ongoing legal disputes. The cases being withdrawn include contentious issues such as the appointment of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) chairman, funding for the Delhi Jal Board, and teacher training abroad. These disputes often reflected the AAP government’s clashes with successive Lieutenant Governors—Najeeb Jung, Anil Baijal, and VK Saxena—over policy implementation. The AAP frequently accused the Lieutenant Governors of obstructing their policies, while the Lieutenant Governors alleged a lack of cooperation from the AAP.
The withdrawal of these cases is seen as a crucial step towards improving governance and reducing political tensions between the Centre and Delhi. The AAP’s conflicts with the Lieutenant Governor were a significant factor in their electoral defeat, with the BJP securing 48 seats in the Assembly. By focusing on governance over legal battles, the BJP government aims to usher in a new era of cooperation and stability in Delhi’s administration.
