Panaji: Dempo Challengers began their campaign in the GSB Unity Cup 3.0 with an emphatic six wicket victory over CD Fountainhead in a floodlit encounter at the MCC ground in Margao on Wednesday. The tournament is being organised by the Goa GSB Sports and Charitable Trust.
After winning the toss, Dempo opted to bowl and immediately seized control of the contest. Skipper Aditya Angle produced a decisive spell, returning figures of 4 for 27 from his four overs. He was well supported by Shridhar Keni, who claimed 3 for 25, while Tunish Sawkar chipped in with a wicket to keep the pressure on the opposition.
Despite regular setbacks, CD Fountainhead found resistance through captain Pranav Biche, who played an aggressive knock of 53 from just 29 deliveries. His innings featured five boundaries and four sixes and provided the only substantial momentum for his side. Anish Prabhudesai added 20, but the lack of partnerships hurt Fountainhead as they were bowled out for 136 in 19.3 overs.
In reply, Dempo Challengers approached the chase with confidence and attacking intent. Sumiran Amonkar and Tunish Sawkar turned the match decisively with a 78 run partnership for the second wicket. Amonkar struck 51 off 30 balls, hammering nine fours, while Sawkar scored 50 from 29 deliveries, clearing the ropes three times and finding the boundary on four occasions. Their calculated assault ensured there were no late complications.
Dempo reached 139 for 4 in just 13.5 overs, comfortably overhauling the target with 37 balls remaining. Vikrant Prabhu and Niraj Wagle managed a wicket each for Fountainhead, but the total proved insufficient.
Aditya Angle was named Man of the Match, while Tunish Sawkar received the Hero of the Match award for his all round contribution.
