PANAJI: Incessant rain today has continued to create havoc across the state. Hundreds of incidents of flooding, tree uprooting, landslides etc were reported in Goa.
As per the preliminary assessment, 60 Electricity poles have been uprooted primarily in areas such as Sanguem, Usgao, Sattari etc. A landslide on Nhaibag to Pernem (National Highway 66) prompted the authorities to divert the traffic on the old route by blocking one lane. The Tin roof of the Honda Civil Supply godown flew away due to strong wind exposing the food grains to rain water.
Further, part of a bridge over a culvert gave way at Navra, Khotigao, Water entered several houses at Par, Asnora, Altinho to Mala road caved in, and Car washed away at Nanora, Bicholim. Occupants of the car have been rescued, Landslide near the High Court at Penha de Franca, Porvorim.
Also, the old iconic mango tree at Diwar, situated on the way from Ribandar ferry point to Diwar island uprooted.
Meanwhile, a flood-like situation was witnessed at several places in the State with water entering houses in many places. In the capital city of Panjim, areas like Patto and Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) bus terminus were flooded with water entering into some offices located at the prime business locality.
Due to the incessant rains, a portion of road caved near the District and Sessions Court at Mala, Panaji, forcing the authorities to close the road for vehicular traffic.
According to IMD Goa, Old Goa received highest 6.4 inches of rainfall followed by Goa State Biodiversity (5.3 inches), Panjim (4.9 inches0, Canacona (2.4 inches), Mormugao (2.3 inches) and Mapusa (1.04 inches) between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on July 7.
The IMD has issued a Red alert for Monday, July 8, warning heavy to very heavy rainfall at many places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places with strong winds over North Goa and South Goa districts.
Due to heavy rains, a shed in Caranzalem used for repairing fishing nets collapsed, and two workers managed to escape with minor injuries. In addition, heavy rainfall caused the recently constructed hot mixed road at Usgao-Ganje to collapse, obstructing traffic.
All District SPs and SP Traffic have been directed by DGP Jaspal Singh to keep a careful eye on the situation. He added that the District SPs are in communication with Collectors and the Fire Department Chief, and that the SP SPCR is in charge of making sure that the control room operates effectively and that all distress calls are handled. The Commandant IRB is prepared to use force, he said.
In the event of an emergency involving traffic, the public has also been provided with the phone number of traffic police inspectors.
