New Delhi: Legendary screen icon Dharmendra has passed away at the age of 89, leaving the Indian film industry and millions of admirers united in grief. The news of his demise has created a sombre atmosphere across Mumbai, where fans and colleagues gathered to bid an emotional farewell to one of Hindi cinema’s most enduring and loved performers.
The Pawan Hans Crematorium witnessed an early influx of well-known personalities as tributes began to pour in. Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan were among the first to arrive, joining the growing crowd that had assembled to pay last respects. Many fans stood silently outside, hoping to glimpse the final procession of the actor whose work shaped generations of film lovers.
At Dharmendra’s residence, scenes of deep sorrow unfolded as family members arrived. Sunny Deol reached the home visibly shaken, while Esha Deol entered quietly, choosing not to address the media gathered outside. Hema Malini also remained with the family as they prepared for the final rites, surrounded by an atmosphere heavy with emotion.
Dharmendra had recently returned home after being treated for breathlessness at Breach Candy Hospital. Although he was said to be recovering, his health reportedly worsened on Thursday morning, leading to urgent medical attention. Despite efforts, he could not be revived. The loss feels particularly painful for the family, as they had only weeks earlier urged the public to refrain from spreading false reports about his health following a wave of online rumours.
Across his illustrious career, Dharmendra stood as one of the most admired figures in Indian cinema. His roles in films such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Dream Girl, Dharam Veer and Mera Gaon Mera Desh cemented his reputation as a charismatic performer capable of both intensity and warmth. His legacy spans decades, influencing actors, filmmakers and audiences alike.
As the industry gathers to honour him, Dharmendra’s contribution continues to shine, marking the end of an era but leaving behind an extraordinary body of work that will be cherished for generations.
