New Delhi: As the ‘Digital India’ mission marks a decade of transformation, top Union Ministers on Tuesday hailed the initiative as a people-driven revolution that has redefined governance, empowered citizens, and positioned India as a rising global digital leader.
In a series of celebratory messages, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the initiative, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015, has grown beyond a government scheme to become a “people’s movement”, central to building an Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
“From bringing internet access to remote corners to digitising government services, the ‘Digital India’ initiative has bridged the digital divide across the country,” she posted on X.
Highlighting the success of Unified Payments Interface (UPI), she noted, “Scan. Pay. Done. India’s UPI revolution now powers nearly half of the world’s real-time digital transactions.”
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also praised the mission’s success, citing landmark initiatives like UPI, DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer), GeM (Government e-Marketplace), ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce), and SVAMITVA. These, he said, are propelling India from digital governance to global digital leadership.
“When the intent is right, innovation empowers the less empowered,” he quoted Prime Minister Modi on X.
In a special LinkedIn post, Prime Minister Modi himself reflected on the bold decision to launch Digital India a decade ago.
“Ten years ago, we chose to trust the ability of Indians to embrace technology, when others doubted it,” PM Modi wrote.
He called upon entrepreneurs, innovators, and dreamers, stating, “The world is now looking to India for the next digital breakthrough.”
Empowering Farmers, Boosting Trade
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi highlighted the programme’s impact on agriculture, crediting eNAM (Electronic National Agriculture Market) for revolutionising farm trade.
“With over Rs 4 lakh crore in transactions and 1.7 crore farmers empowered across 1,400+ mandis, Digital India has brought transparency and reach to the agricultural sector,” he said.
As the Digital India mission completes 10 transformative years, it stands as one of the Modi government’s flagship achievements—digitising governance, promoting financial inclusion, and redefining public service delivery.
From Aadhaar-enabled services and real-time digital payments to smart cities and e-marketplaces, Digital India is no longer an ambition—it’s a reality millions live every day.
